Retrofitting Babboe Lighting: Choosing the Right Exterior and Interior Lighting
shares
Would you like to retrofit your Babboe with lights? First, it is crucial to determine where you need more light: on the road or under the rain cover. If the front or rear lights are not working, the issue concerns the existing bicycle lighting. If you can barely see the seat belts, gloves, or luggage when buckling in, you need additional light inside the box.
Here you will learn how to distinguish between the two tasks, what you should check before retrofitting, and which Babboe models you can choose from for CargoGLOW.
Which light is missing on your Babboe?
| Your problem | The appropriate next step |
|---|---|
| Front or rear light does not come on | Check the power supply and operation using the manual for your specific bike |
| The existing bicycle light is defective or needs to be replaced | Have a suitable replacement light with the appropriate mount and power supply selected |
| It is dark under the rain cover when buckling in or searching | Check additional interior lighting for the box |
| You would like to compare several interior lighting solutions | Compare string lights, battery-powered lights, and special cargo bike lighting |
Interior lighting does not replace mandatory bicycle lighting. A bright interior will not help you if the required front or rear light has failed.
Why not every Babboe light is connected the same way
The brand name alone is not enough to choose a bicycle light. The model, version, and year of manufacture can make a difference.
An example is shown on the Babboe manufacturer's page for the Carve: There, Babboe describes the lighting of the Carve Mountain as being powered by the bicycle battery and operated from the handlebars. For the Carve E described there, Babboe, on the other hand, mentions battery-powered lights.
Therefore, do not apply this information to another Babboe or another generation without checking. Even within a brand, the light may operate independently of the drive.
If your light does not turn on:
- Determine the exact model designation and, if possible, the year of manufacture.
- Check the appropriate manual to see how the lighting is switched on.
- Depending on the version, check the lamp batteries or the state of charge of the bicycle battery.
- Look for visible damage to the light, mount, and accessible cables.
- If the light still does not work, have the cause checked at a bicycle shop.
Replacing it with just any e-bike light is not a reliable solution: the connection, power supply, and mounting must suit your bike. The appropriate manual is more important than the mere designation "for e-bikes".
Retrofitting light in the box: a separate task
The front light illuminates the path. Under the rain cover, you need light in a different place: at the seat, seat belts, and luggage.
This is especially noticeable on the morning way to daycare. You want to see if the seat belt is twisted, look for a glove, or unload the bags in the dark. An interior light under the cover is designed for this.
With CargoGLOW, we complement this area: The lighting is located under the compatible rain cover and illuminates the box. The standard version is powered via a 5V USB power bank. No connection to the Babboe drive is required for this.
Our comparison of string lights, LED strips, and cargo bike interior lighting shows what the basic alternatives are.
Which CargoGLOW version is available for your Babboe?
In our product selection, you will currently find the following Babboe designations:
| Designation in the CargoGLOW selection | Versions |
|---|---|
| Babboe Carve/Flow | With dimmer including remote control or without dimmer |
| Babboe Curve | With dimmer including remote control or without dimmer |
| Babboe Dog | With dimmer including remote control or without dimmer |
| Babboe Go | With dimmer including remote control or without dimmer |
| Babboe Big/Max E | With dimmer including remote control or without dimmer |
The table reflects the current selection designations in the shop. It is not a blanket approval for every year of manufacture, every new model generation, or every retrofitted cover.
Babboe City, Mini, and Belong are currently not listed as separate CargoGLOW versions in this selection. Do not simply choose the similarly named variant for a model that is not listed. Clarify the fit with us beforehand. The exact model designation and photos of the rain cover and its frame are helpful.

Before assembly: You should check these five points
1. Consider the model and rain cover together
The actually mounted cover counts for mounting. If you have taken over a used bike or a different rain cover, its assignment should be clear before ordering.
2. Look at the mounting points
CargoGLOW is mounted with the appropriate mounts on the cover frame according to our operating instructions. The exact version must fit your setup. If something only seems to fit with force or by damaging the cover, clarify the assembly with us first.
3. Plan the cable route
Cables should not obstruct entry, the seat belts, or moving parts. Also check what happens when opening and removing the rain cover: A connection must not be unintentionally put under tension.
4. Select a suitable power bank
Use a power bank suitable for your CargoGLOW version. The required output power is also crucial. Our information on suitable power banks helps with the selection. No protection for an arbitrary power bank can be derived from the moisture protection of a light.
5. Test the light position and operation
First test the lighting while stationary. The seat and seat belts should remain visible without the light source shining uncomfortably directly into the eyes. Then check whether the cover and entry can still be operated as intended.
With or without a dimmer?
With a dimmer and remote control, you can adjust the brightness. This is practical if you want more light when buckling in and then find a lower brightness more pleasant.
Without a dimmer, this brightness control is omitted. Which version fits better depends on how you want to use the light in everyday life.
Exterior lighting remains important regardless
Front light, rear light, and the required reflectors must continue to be present and functional. The requirements for bicycle lighting are regulated by § 67 StVZO.
If you would like to change the street lighting of your Babboe in addition to the interior lighting, have the appropriate solution for your specific bike checked. This guide does not replace instructions for an electrical conversion.
For older Babboe bikes, you should also clarify the recall and inspection status applicable to your bike. The current manufacturer information and the next steps stated there are decisive. Accessory retrofitting is not a safety approval for the bicycle.
Frequently asked questions about retrofitting Babboe lights
Can I connect CargoGLOW to the Babboe battery?
The standard version described here is powered via a 5V USB power bank. This description does not provide for a direct connection to the Babboe bicycle battery.
Does CargoGLOW fit every Babboe?
No, you should not assume that. Certain Babboe versions are listed in the shop. Your model and the rain cover used are crucial. For other models or unclear generations, we will help you with the assignment before ordering.
Why does the box remain dark even though the bicycle light works?
Because the bicycle light covers the path or the traffic in front and behind. Interior lighting complements light directly under the rain cover.
Can I use string lights instead?
This depends on the specific product and its mounting, power supply, and suitability for the place of use. You can find a general comparison in our linked interior light guide.
Is the power bank included in the delivery?
No. For the standard version, you need a suitable separate power bank.
If you need light under the rain cover, start with the assignment of your model. Choose the appropriate Babboe version at CargoGLOW – or contact us if the model or cover is not clear.
