Butchers & Bicycles MK1-E: Rain canopy, Skyview and light in the box

The Butchers & Bicycles MK1-E is already strikingly well-lit straight from the factory: the current Gen. 3 comes with two front headlights, and a dedicated rear light is added at the back. With the Hood with Skyview, the box also becomes weather-resistant while remaining pleasantly bright during the day.

In the dark, however, things look different. This is because even two front lights shine forward onto the road – not into the box. And the large Skyview window can only let in light that is already present outside. When you are buckling up children in the morning, unloading groceries in the evening, or want to take a quick look into the box while on the go, a dedicated light source under the canopy is quickly missed.

This is exactly what this guide is about: What does the Hood with Skyview actually achieve, what role does the standard lighting play, and how does our CargoGLOW interior lighting make for a sensible addition to the MK1-E?

What is the benefit of the Hood with Skyview for the MK1-E?

The Hood with Skyview from Butchers & Bicycles is the matching rain canopy for the MK1-E. It provides protection against wind, rain, and cold, and features large transparent areas that allow plenty of light into the box during the day.

This is pleasant in everyday use: the box feels less enclosed, children can look outside, and you have a good view into the interior in daylight. The front can also be rolled up if you want more airflow or quick access to the box.

The name "Skyview" therefore describes quite well what the canopy can do: It makes use of existing daylight. It is not, however, an interior lighting system in its own right.

Why the box remains dark at night despite Skyview

Large windows only help if there is light outside. During the dark time of the year, however, many typical family trips take place exactly when that is hardly the case: in the morning before daycare or school, in the late afternoon, or in the evening after shopping.

This creates a protected, but also dark interior space under the canopy. You will notice this particularly with small things:

  • You want to see if the harness is positioned correctly.
  • A glove or a water bottle is lying somewhere in the box.
  • You are quickly looking for a hat or toy while getting in.
  • You are unloading groceries in the dark.
  • You want to see what the children are doing with a quick glance.

For these situations, the Skyview window hardly helps you at night. For that, you need light directly inside the box.

What lighting does the current MK1-E Gen. 3 have?

Butchers & Bicycles lists two Lezyne Power E115s at the front and a Trelock L424 at the back for the current MK1-E Gen. 3. The lighting is part of the e-bike system and is designed specifically for road traffic.

The two front lights are a real advantage: they illuminate the area in front of the bike broadly. But here, too, the following applies: More external light does not automatically mean more light under the rain canopy.

If you ride an older MK1-E, the specific lighting system might look different. However, the fundamental distinction remains the same: front and rear lights take care of the road and your visibility in traffic. Interior lighting takes care of the box.

Our CargoGLOW interior lighting for the Butchers & Bicycles MK1-E

CargoGLOW is available from us specifically for the Butchers & Bicycles MK1-E. In the shop, simply select the "Butchers & Bicycles MK1" variant and then decide whether you want it with or without a dimmer.

Our interior lighting sits under the rain canopy and brings light exactly where you need it in everyday life: to children, harnesses, bags, and luggage.

The LED strip produces neutral light at 4000 K. An integrated diffuser distributes the light evenly so that it does not dazzle. The strip is flexible and waterproof. CargoGLOW is powered via a normal USB connection from a 5V power bank – so you don't have to touch the MK1-E's electrical system.

Skyview and CargoGLOW complement each other

The Hood with Skyview and CargoGLOW solve two different problems:

Component Purpose
Hood with Skyview Protects against weather and allows as much existing light as possible into the box during the day
Front and rear light Illuminate the road and make the bike visible in traffic
CargoGLOW Brings dedicated light into the box under the canopy

This is exactly why interior light for the MK1-E is not a replacement for something already present. It supplements the equipment where the other components are deliberately not designed to work.

More light inside – and better visibility from the outside

CargoGLOW has a second effect: the illuminated interior is much more noticeable from the outside than a dark box.

Especially with the MK1-E and its large canopy, this creates a visibly glowing area around the box. Of course, this does not replace either the front or rear light. However, you will be seen better in the dark, which additionally increases your safety.

If you would like to classify this topic generally, you will find a broader overview in our guide Cargo bike in the dark: solving lighting and visibility correctly.

With or without a dimmer?

We offer CargoGLOW for the Butchers & Bicycles MK1-E both with and without a dimmer.

Without dimmer

If you primarily need light for getting in, buckling up, looking for things, or unloading, the standard version is perfectly sufficient. Connect the power bank, light on – done.

With dimmer and remote control

If children frequently ride along in the dark, the dimmable version is more pleasant. It can be brighter when buckling up, while you can reduce the brightness during the ride. The matching radio remote control is included with this variant.

Which variant is more suitable therefore depends less on the bike than on your everyday life.

Why not just hang a small battery-powered lamp in the box?

You can certainly do that. For occasional use, this is a simple solution. In everyday life, however, the usual disadvantages quickly become apparent: a small lamp usually only illuminates a limited area, can hang awkwardly or dazzle, and needs to be securely fastened somewhere.

In contrast, an LED strip distributes the light over a larger area under the canopy. Especially with the spacious MK1-E, this has a much more even effect.

MK1-E in autumn and winter: our simple light check

  1. Check front and rear lights: Both must function reliably.
  2. Keep the Skyview window clean: This allows more light in during the day and maintains better visibility.
  3. Illuminate the interior separately: So that you can recognize children, harnesses, and luggage even in low ambient light.
  4. Stow the power bank neatly: The cable should lie cleanly and not hang loosely in the box.

FAQ: Butchers & Bicycles MK1-E, Skyview, and interior lighting

Does the MK1-E have interior lighting in the box?

On the current Gen. 3 product page, Butchers & Bicycles lists the exterior lighting with two front lights and one rear light. Integrated interior lighting for the box is not mentioned there as standard equipment.

Does the Hood with Skyview provide enough light in the box?

During the day, the large transparent window helps significantly because existing daylight falls into the box. In the dark, however, it cannot generate light. For that, you need dedicated interior lighting.

Does CargoGLOW fit the Butchers & Bicycles MK1-E?

Yes. We offer a dedicated "Butchers & Bicycles MK1" variant – with or without a dimmer.

Is CargoGLOW connected to the Bosch drive?

No. Our standard CargoGLOW version runs independently via a 5V power bank with USB.

Does CargoGLOW replace the two front lights or the rear light?

No. CargoGLOW is additional interior lighting. The standard bicycle lighting remains necessary.

Does CargoGLOW also help with visibility from the outside?

Yes. The illuminated interior under the canopy is much more noticeable in the dark. This complements the existing exterior lighting but does not replace it.

Skyview for the day, CargoGLOW for the dark

The Hood with Skyview is a strong solution for weather protection and daylight on the MK1-E. As soon as it gets dark outside, however, the interior needs its own light source.

This is exactly where CargoGLOW comes in: more light in the box, a better view of children and luggage, and a clearly visible glowing area under the canopy.
