The CUBE Cargo Hybrid comes well-equipped for rides in the dark: a headlight for the road, a taillight for rear visibility, and a large transport box for children or cargo. However, as soon as you use the box with a rain cover, something becomes apparent: The bike is illuminated on the outside – but it can still be quite dark on the inside.

You notice this quickly, especially in autumn and winter. You buckle your child in during the dark morning hours, look for gloves in the box, or want to check if everything is okay in the back during a short break. That is exactly why it is worth distinguishing between three different lighting tasks: seeing, being seen, and illuminating the interior.

What lighting does the CUBE Cargo Hybrid already have?

Current CUBE Cargo Hybrid models are equipped with LED front and rear lights. This lighting primarily performs two tasks:

• The headlight illuminates the road ahead of you.
• The taillight ensures that your cargo bike is perceived from behind.

What this lighting does not do: illuminate the interior of the transport box.

This is not a flaw in the lighting concept. After all, a bicycle headlight is intended to illuminate the road in front of you and not to shine backwards into the box.

The CUBE Rain Cover CARGO 3.0

For the CUBE Cargo Hybrid, there is a matching CUBE accessory: the Rain Cover CARGO 3.0. The cover is made of water-repellent material and features a PVC window as well as a roll-up fly screen. It is mounted using fiberglass rods and a fastening system on the box.

This is practical for everyday family life: the cover protects children or cargo from rain and dirt and makes the CUBE Cargo Hybrid significantly more weather-independent.

In the dark, however, a separate space is created under such a cover. Street lighting and headlights only reach inside to a limited extent. The darker the surroundings, the clearer the difference between lighting on the bike and lighting in the box becomes.

Why is light in the transport box practical at all?

Those who use their cargo bike mainly during the day probably rarely think about interior lighting. In autumn and winter, that quickly changes.

Many parents know typical situations: you want to check in the morning if the harness is positioned correctly. A glove has fallen somewhere onto the bottom of the box. Your child is looking for their stuffed animal. After shopping, the front door key is buried between bags and jackets. Or you simply want to take a quick look back and see what is happening there.

Interior lighting therefore solves a different task than a stronger bicycle headlight.

Front light:
Illuminates the road in front of the cargo bike. You can identify obstacles, the road surface, and the path ahead.

Taillight and reflective elements:
Support your visibility to other road users.

Interior lighting:
Brings light directly to where the front and rear lights do not reach: into the transport box under the rain cover.

Exactly this distinction is crucial. More light on the road does not automatically make the box brighter – and light in the box certainly does not replace the required bicycle lighting.
