Dolly Joy Rain Cover: Visibility and light in the box

For the Dolly Joy, the rain cover is more than just protection from bad weather. It turns the open box into a sheltered space for children and luggage. This is exactly why the next question quickly arises in autumn and winter: How do you get enough light into the box under the cover?

The current Dolly Joy comes factory-fitted with an 80-lux front light and an integrated rear light. The rain cover also features reflective details. This is a good basis for riding in road traffic. However, the interior under the cover still quickly becomes gloomy when it gets dark.

In this guide, we will show you what the new Dolly Joy rain cover can do, the difference between reflective details and actual interior lighting, and how our CargoGLOW interior lighting complements the setup.

Which rain cover fits the Dolly Joy?

Dolly offers its own rain cover for the current Joy. The manufacturer explicitly points out that this cover only fits the Dolly Joy and not the older Dolly Family.

This is important because the box and mounting points have changed. With the current Joy, the mounting points are located directly in the box. Added to this are large PVC windows, roll-up side panels, and a rear panel that can also be opened.

If you ride a Dolly Joy, you need the current Joy rain cover. For an older Dolly Family or V1, you should not simply order the same canopy.

What are the benefits of the new Dolly Joy rain cover?

The cover protects children and luggage from rain, wind, and sun. At the same time, the box remains relatively open and bright thanks to the large windows, as long as there is enough daylight outside.

The roll-up windows are also practical. In warmer weather, you can open the sides and the rear without removing the entire cover. In addition, there are reflective details that reflect light from the outside and can make the cover more visible in the dark.

However, it is important to make the distinction: Reflective elements do not generate light themselves. They only work when illuminated by another light source.

What lighting does the Dolly Joy have as standard?

For the current Joy, Dolly specifies a Büchel LED front light with 80 lux. The rear light is integrated into the mudguard.

This covers standard bicycle lighting: the front light illuminates the road in front of you, and the rear light ensures you are seen from behind.

What neither of these specifically illuminates is the area under the rain cover. But that is exactly where children, straps, bags, and groceries are located.

Why the box remains dark under the rain cover anyway

During the day, the large windows of the cover help. In the dark, however, there is only as much light as falls in from the outside. And in winter, that is often not much.

You are probably already familiar with typical situations:

• In the morning, you want to see if the harness is properly fastened.
• A child is looking for their hat, gloves, or water bottle.
• You are unloading groceries from the box in the evening.
• You want to quickly see what is going on under the cover.
• When getting in, you want to see where bags or jackets are located.

The front light is not intended for any of these purposes. It shines forward onto the road – and that is exactly what it is supposed to do.

Reflective details and interior lighting are not the same

One does not replace the other. The combination is particularly sensible: exterior lighting and reflectors take care of riding in traffic, while CargoGLOW takes care of the interior.

We offer a specific CargoGLOW version for the Dolly. In the shop, you simply select “Dolly” and then decide whether you want the lighting with or without a dimmer.

Our interior lighting is installed under the rain cover. The LED strip produces neutral light at 4000 K and is evenly distributed via an integrated diffuser. This illuminates the box more broadly without a single small lamp shining directly into one’s eyes.

The strip is flexible and waterproof. CargoGLOW is powered via a standard USB port from a 5V power bank. You therefore do not need to touch the Bosch electrical system of the Dolly Joy.

What additional benefits does CargoGLOW provide for the Dolly Joy?

The first advantage is the obvious one: You see more inside. Harnesses, children, bags, and luggage remain easily recognizable even in the dark.

The second advantage is visibility from the outside. A larger illuminated area is created under the rain cover. This makes the bike more noticeable in the dark than it would be with a completely dark box.

Of course, this does not replace the mandatory bicycle lighting. Front and rear lights remain necessary. CargoGLOW complements them.

With or without a dimmer?

Without a dimmer

If you mainly need the light for getting in, buckling up, searching, or unloading, the standard version is perfectly sufficient. Connect the power bank, switch the light on – done.

With dimmer and remote control

If children regularly ride along in the dark, the dimmable version is more comfortable. It can be brighter while buckling up, and you can reduce the brightness while riding. The wireless remote control is included with this version.

Which version fits better depends less on the bike than on your daily routine.

Dolly Joy or older Dolly Family: what you should look out for

Regarding the cover, the matter is clear: Dolly itself points out that the current Joy rain cover does not fit the Dolly Family.

For this reason, you should always check which generation you are riding when buying accessories. This article refers to the current Dolly Joy with the current Joy rain cover.

Why not just a small battery-powered lamp?

That is possible, of course. For occasional use, a small battery light may suffice. In everyday life, however, the difference quickly becomes apparent: a single lamp usually only illuminates a small area. A longer LED strip distributes the light more evenly throughout the interior.

1. Check front and rear lights: They are the basis for every ride in the dark.
2. Keep the rain cover windows clean: This ensures as much light as possible gets in during the day.
3. Keep reflective details clean: Only then can they effectively reflect light from the outside.
4. Illuminate the interior separately: This allows you to see children, harnesses, and luggage even with little ambient light.
5. Stow the power bank properly: The cable should be neatly laid out and not hanging loosely in the box.

Does the current rain cover also fit the Dolly Family?

No. Dolly explicitly points out that the current rain cover is only intended for the Dolly Joy and does not fit the older Dolly Family.

Does the Dolly Joy have interior lighting in the box?

The current Dolly Joy product page mentions the 80-lux front light and the integrated rear light. Integrated interior lighting for the box is not listed there.

What is the benefit of the reflective details on the cover?

They reflect light from the outside and can therefore improve visibility. However, they are not a light source themselves and do not illuminate the interior.
