Gazelle Makki: How to correctly combine the rain cover and interior lighting

The Gazelle Makki is designed specifically for everyday family life: a tall cargo box, a rain cover as an accessory, and standard bicycle lights for riding in traffic. However, as soon as you are buckling children in the dark in the morning, looking for a glove, or taking groceries out of the box in the evening, you quickly realize: Front and rear lights do not solve the problem inside the cargo box.

Especially with a rain cover, the Makki creates a separate, protected space for children and luggage. This is exactly where additional light is particularly practical. In this guide, we show you what role bicycle lighting plays, what the Makki rain cover offers, and how our CargoGLOW interior lighting complements the setup.

What lighting does the Gazelle Makki have from the factory?

Gazelle currently offers several Makki models, including the Makki Urban, Makki Load, and Makki Travel. The exact equipment may differ depending on the model and model year. For the current Gazelle Makki Load, Gazelle specifies, for example, a Spanninga Axendo 60 as a front light and a Spanninga Solo as a rear light. Both are powered by the e-bike battery.

Thus, the standard lighting fulfills exactly its intended purpose: the front light illuminates the area in front of the bike, and the rear light ensures visibility from behind. What these lights do not specifically illuminate is the cargo box behind the front light—and thus the area where children, harnesses, jackets, toys, or groceries are located.

If you ride a different Makki model or an older year, you should always check the equipment of your specific bike for the exact exterior lighting. Regarding the question of light inside the box, however, the difference remains the same: Exterior lighting and interior lighting have two different tasks.

What the Makki rain cover can do – and what it can't

Gazelle offers a rain hood or rain cover as an accessory for the Makki. On the current Makki model page, Gazelle describes the rain hood along with other accessories for the cargo box. Its job is clear: children and luggage should sit protected in the box during bad weather.

In everyday life, this is extremely practical, especially in autumn and winter. At the same time, the cover creates a more enclosed interior space. As soon as there is little light outside, it quickly becomes dark under the roof – especially where the front light is not intended to shine.

A rain cover is weather protection, not interior lighting. If you really want to see inside the box whether the harness is fastened correctly, where the pacifier is, or if the water bottle is still under the blanket, you need a separate light source there.

Why light in the Makki cargo box is so practical in everyday life

The topic might initially sound like a minor comfort detail. In practice, however, you encounter it constantly as soon as the days get shorter:

• You take the children to daycare or school in the morning before it is properly bright.
• You want to see while buckling them in that harnesses and clothing are properly adjusted.
• Under the rain cover, you are looking for gloves, a hat, a water bottle, or toys.
• After work, you unload groceries from a dark box.
• During the ride, you want to see better what is happening in the box with a quick glance.

Interior lighting is intended precisely for these situations. It is not meant to make the road in front of you brighter, but to make the area visible that standard bicycle lighting is intentionally not illuminating.

With dimmer and remote control: adjust brightness to the situation

If your children regularly ride along in the dark, the dimmable version is particularly pleasant. You can have it brighter when buckling them in and reduce the brightness during the ride. This way, you don't have to choose between full illumination and complete darkness.

Which version fits better depends less on the bike than on your daily routine: For maximum simplicity, the standard version is sufficient. For more control and comfort, the version with a dimmer is the more flexible choice.

Why loose battery lamps or fairy lights are not the same

Of course, you can initially experiment with a small battery lamp, tent light, or string of lights. Such solutions are the first things that come to mind for many parents. They can provide light in the short term, but they bring typical questions: Where is the lamp attached? Does it stay in place on bumpy roads? Does it glare? Does it have to be charged or switched on separately every time? And does the solution still look tidy after a few weeks?

How to make your Gazelle Makki ready for dark autumn and winter rides

1. Check exterior lighting: Front and rear lights must function reliably. This is the basis for every ride in the dark.
2. Use the rain cover appropriately: In cold, wind, and rain, the Makki rain hood protects children and luggage in the box.
3. Illuminate the interior separately: If you want more overview under the closed cover, add interior lighting.
4. Choose brightness based on usage: Decide whether simple on/off is enough for you or if you want to remain flexible with a dimmer.

Does the Gazelle Makki have interior lighting in the cargo box?

Current Gazelle product pages describe standard bicycle lighting with front and rear lights. Integrated lighting for the cargo box is not listed as standard equipment. You can add separate interior lighting for this area.
