muli rain cover & interior lighting: light in the foldable basket
shares
The muli is practical precisely because it doesn't feel like a huge cargo bike. The basket can be folded in, the bike remains compact, and with a rain cover, it becomes an everyday family companion for wet and cold days. However, as soon as you are out and about in the dark in the morning or evening, a second question arises: How do you get light into the basket under the rain cover?
Front and rear lights handle the lighting for road traffic. However, they are not designed to illuminate children, harnesses, or luggage in the basket. This is exactly where our CargoGLOW interior lighting complements your muli.
What makes the muli special: compact, foldable, suitable for everyday use
muli describes the current Classic concept as a cargo bike and city bike in one. With an overall length of under two meters, it is hardly longer than a normal city bike. The crucial difference to many other long-john cargo bikes is the foldable basket: when you don't need the storage space, you can simply fold it away.
The family setup includes accessories such as a child seat and rain cover. According to the muli FAQ, their own accessories are designed in such a way that, for example, the child seat and rain cover still fit even when the basket is folded.
This design makes the muli particularly flexible – but it also places different requirements on interior lighting compared to a permanently open, rigid cargo bike box.
Which lights take care of the muli on the road?
Standard bicycle lighting primarily has one clear task: it ensures that you can illuminate the area in front of the bike and be seen by other road users. In the published muli Motor manual, muli mentions, among other things, a white front light, a red rear light, and the mandatory reflectors, designating the lighting system described therein as StVZO-compliant (German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations).
This is the basis for riding in the dark. However, this exterior lighting does not replace light inside the basket. The front light is intended to illuminate the road – not the area behind or under the rain cover.
What the muli rain cover can do – and where extra light helps
The muli rain cover protects children and cargo from wind and weather. This is a huge advantage, especially in autumn and winter. At the same time, a clearly defined interior space is created under the cover. When it gets dark outside, it is precisely this area that quickly remains in the shadows.
In everyday life, you often want to see more there: Is the harness fastened correctly? Where is the glove? Has the water bottle slipped under the blanket? Is there still something in the basket before you fold it up?
The rain cover provides weather protection. The interior lighting provides an overview of the basket. Both complement each other, but replace neither the front nor the rear light.
Why light in the foldable muli basket is particularly practical
- Buckling up in the dark: Harnesses, jackets, and buckles are easier to see.
- Getting in and out: Children can better see their place under the cover.
- Finding luggage: Gloves, hats, shopping, or toys no longer disappear into a dark corner.
- Before folding: You can recognize more quickly whether there is still something in the basket.
- During the ride: With a quick glance, you can better see what is happening in the interior.
And because the illuminated interior is also much more visible from the outside, CargoGLOW ensures you are better seen in the dark, thereby increasing your safety.
Foldable basket and interior lighting: what you should pay attention to
The special feature of the muli is its folding mechanism. muli itself confirms that their own accessories, such as the child seat and rain cover, can be stowed away when the basket is folded. Nevertheless, for additional lighting, the following applies: Nothing must be pinched or pulled when folding in or out.
Therefore, check before folding that the LED strip, cable, and power bank are lying free and not caught between moving parts. Our CargoGLOW interior lighting is attached to the rods of the rain cover. The PerfectFit system is designed for quick installation, allowing you to handle the lighting easily as needed.
Our CargoGLOW interior lighting for the muli
You can find CargoGLOW in our shop, specifically for the muli. For the muli version, you receive a 1-meter long CargoGLOW LED strip and five matching clips for the rods of the rain cover.
Our LED lighting produces neutral light at 4000 K. The built-in diffuser ensures the light is glare-free. The strip is flexible and waterproof. CargoGLOW is powered via a standard USB connection from a 5V power bank – independent of your muli's drive system.
In doing so, we complement exactly the area that standard bicycle lighting does not cover: the interior space under the rain cover.

CargoGLOW with or without a dimmer: what suits your muli?
We offer CargoGLOW for the muli both with and without a dimmer.
Without a dimmer: uncomplicated light in the basket
If you mainly use CargoGLOW when buckling up, getting in, searching, or loading and unloading, the standard version is the simple solution: light on, interior bright, done.
With dimmer and remote control: flexibly adjust brightness
If children regularly ride along in the dark, the dimmable version is particularly practical. You can use a brighter setting to buckle up and reduce the brightness during the ride. The dimmer is positioned between the power bank and CargoGLOW; the corresponding radio remote control is included with this version.
If a simple on/off is enough for you, choose the standard version. If you would like to adjust the brightness depending on the situation, the version with a dimmer is the more flexible choice.
Why a loose battery-powered light is not the same
Of course, you can temporarily hang a small battery-powered lamp or fairy lights in the basket. That also creates light. In everyday life, however, typical questions quickly arise: Where do you attach it? Does it stay in place on cobblestones? Does it illuminate evenly? Does it dazzle? And does it get in the way when folding or unfolding?
If you want to compare all solutions fundamentally, read our guide Retrofitting interior lighting in cargo bikes: fairy lights, LED, or CargoGLOW?. This muli guide consciously focuses on the interaction between the rain cover, the foldable basket, and the interior light.
How to make your muli fit for dark autumn and winter rides
- Check exterior lighting: Front and rear lights must function reliably.
- Mount rain cover: This keeps children and luggage protected from wind and weather.
- Illuminate interior separately: Add light exactly where the front light deliberately does not shine.
- Position power bank sensibly: Cables must not get loose into moving parts.
- Check before folding: Make sure that the lighting, cables, and power bank are not pinched.

Interior lighting complements bicycle lighting – it does not replace it
CargoGLOW is an additional interior lighting solution for the area under the rain cover. Your muli's mandatory bicycle lighting remains necessary. Front lights, rear lights, and reflectors handle their tasks in road traffic; CargoGLOW brings light into the basket.

FAQ: muli rain cover and interior lighting
Does the muli rain cover have integrated interior lighting?
On the current muli websites and in the rain cover specifications we have checked, there is no mention of integrated interior lighting as a component of the cover. If you want light in the basket, you can add separate interior lighting.
Does CargoGLOW fit the muli?
Yes. You can find CargoGLOW in our shop specifically for the muli. Simply select the "Muli" variant in our product and then choose whether you want it with or without a dimmer.
Can I use CargoGLOW under the muli rain cover?
Yes. Our CargoGLOW interior lighting attaches to the rods of the rain cover and is specifically designed for the interior space under a box cover.
Can the muli basket still be folded with CargoGLOW?
muli confirms that for their own accessories, the rain cover and child seat fit even when the basket is folded. For additional lighting, you should ensure before each folding that the LED strip, cable, and power bank are not pinched or placed under tension. Secure or detach the components if necessary before folding the basket.
Do I need the dimmer?
No. If light on or off is enough for you, the standard version is sufficient. If you would like to reduce or increase the brightness depending on the situation, our version with a dimmer and radio remote control is more convenient.
Does CargoGLOW replace the front or rear light?
