Nihola Family rain cover: Classic or GEN2 – which one fits?

With the Nihola Family, the question of the right rain hood is surprisingly simple: Nihola uses the same Rain Hood for the classic Family and the new Family GEN2. The two hood rods are also carried by the manufacturer for both generations.

The difference lies elsewhere. The Family GEN2 comes equipped with two front lights and a taillight as standard. With the classic Family, the exact lighting depends more on the specific version. However, for the interior under the rain hood, the same applies to both: The front and rear lights do not brighten the box.

In this guide, we will therefore show you which hood fits, how you can distinguish between the Family and Family GEN2, and how you can bring light under the Nihola hood with our CargoGLOW interior lighting.

Does the same rain hood fit the Nihola Family and Family GEN2?

Yes. Nihola lists the current Rain Hood as compatible with the Nihola Family, Nihola Dog, and Nihola Family GEN2.

The allocation for the hood rods is also clear: the Rain Hood Rod for Family/Dog set is also listed for both the Family and Family GEN2.

This is practical, because you don't have to start with a completely new hood system when switching from a classic Family to the GEN2.

Nihola Family or Family GEN2: What is the difference in lighting?

The classic Nihola Family comes in different trim levels and model years. Nihola also offers lighting for it as separate accessories.

With the current Family GEN2, things are clearer: according to the manufacturer, two front lights and one taillight are included as standard equipment. The lights are connected to the Bafang battery.

This means exterior lighting is well handled. The two front lights illuminate the area in front of the bike, and the taillight ensures that you are seen from behind.

What they do not illuminate is the space directly under the rain hood.

Why does it stay dark under the Nihola hood anyway?

The Rain Hood protects children from wind and rain. Light enters the box through the windows during the day. As soon as it gets dark outside, however, this helps only to a limited extent.

Then you quickly realize that exterior and interior lighting serve two different purposes:

• You want to see if the harness is properly fastened when buckling up.
• A child is looking for gloves or a water bottle.
• You want to see where bags and jackets are when getting in.
• In the evening, you are unloading groceries from the box.
• You want to see what is happening under the hood with a quick glance.

For all of this, a brighter front light does almost nothing. It shines forward onto the road – and that is exactly what it is supposed to do.

In the shop, simply select the "Nihola" variant and then choose whether you would like CargoGLOW with or without a dimmer.

With this version, you receive a 1-meter-long LED strip and five matching clips. The light is 4000 K, which is neutral white. An integrated diffuser distributes it evenly and ensures it does not glare. The strip is flexible and waterproof.

CargoGLOW is powered via a standard USB connection from a 5V power bank. You do not need to mess with your Nihola’s electrical system.

What are the benefits of CargoGLOW for the Nihola Family?

The first advantage is simple: You can see more in the box. Children, straps, bags, and luggage remain visible even in the dark.

The second advantage is visible from the outside. Instead of just individual points of light at the front and back, a larger area lights up under the hood. This makes your Nihola perceived as a larger vehicle in the dark. You are seen better, which further increases your safety.

Of course, CargoGLOW does not replace normal bicycle lighting. Front and rear lights remain necessary.

Particularly useful for the Family GEN2: lots of exterior light, but no light in the box

The Family GEN2 is equipped with two front lights. At first, that might sound like the lighting topic is settled.

It is not. The two headlights improve illumination in front of the bike. Under the rain hood, however, the box remains its own distinct area.

This is exactly why both systems complement each other well: Lots of exterior light for the road, and dedicated interior light for children and luggage.

With or without a dimmer?

Without a dimmer

If you mainly need the light for getting in, buckling up, searching for things, or unloading, the standard version is perfectly sufficient. Connect the power bank, turn on the light – done.

With dimmer and remote control

If children frequently ride along in the dark, the dimmable version is more comfortable. It can be brighter when buckling up, and you can reduce the brightness while riding. The radio remote control is included with this version.

Which version fits better therefore depends less on whether you drive a Family or Family GEN2, but rather on how you use the bike.

Why not just a small battery-powered lamp?

You can certainly do that. For occasional use, a small lamp might be enough. In everyday life, however, it has one drawback: it usually only illuminates a small area.

An LED strip distributes the light over a longer area along the hood. Especially with a closed Nihola cabin, this appears more uniform and pleasant.

If the rain hood remains installed almost permanently during the dark season, it is worth a quick check:

1. Check exterior lighting: Front and rear lights must function reliably.
2. Keep the hood windows clean: This ensures as much light as possible enters during the day.
3. Light the interior separately: So that you can recognize children, straps, and luggage even with little ambient light.
4. Stow the power bank neatly: The cable should lie cleanly and not hang loosely in the box.
