The short answer: A great deal for the front, but not automatically for the rear. Urban Arrow has retained the front and the EPP box of the FamilyNext for the FamilyNext², but completely redesigned the rear. Therefore, different rules apply to rain covers, bench seats, or baby seat adapters than to luggage racks or battery locks.

Why are some things compatible while others are not?

With the FamilyNext², Urban Arrow did not reinvent the entire cargo bike. The front section and the EPP box have remained the same in dimensions and shape. That is why current FamilyNext accessories for the box continue to fit. Urban Arrow itself cites the rain cover, baby seat adapter, and box cover as examples.

The rear, however, has been significantly revised: slimmer rear frame, different cable routing, integrated taillight, enclosed chain case, new seat clamp, and other changes. That is exactly where you should not assume that an existing FamilyNext part will automatically fit.

The simplest rule of thumb is:

Everything related to the box at the front: check for FamilyNext accessories first. Everything at the rear: specifically search for FamilyNext².

Rain cover: The FamilyNext Rain Cover Plus also fits the FamilyNext²

Here, the situation is clear. Urban Arrow confirms that the current box accessories for the FamilyNext also fit the FamilyNext². This includes the FamilyNext Rain Cover Plus.

This is important because there are now three different Urban Arrow worlds: the original Family with older Essential and Plus covers, the FamilyNext with its redesigned Rain Cover Plus, and now the FamilyNext², which continues to use this FamilyNext cover.

Second bench seat, baby seat adapter, and box cover: FamilyNext remains the correct generation

For important box accessories, you also do not have to wait for a completely new generation for the FamilyNext². Urban Arrow continues to offer the FamilyNext accessories for the box: this includes the baby seat adapter, box cover, and second bench seat.

However, the direction of compatibility is important: accessories from the original Urban Arrow Family are not automatically the same. The front frame was already changed when switching from the Family to the FamilyNext. That is why the Rain Cover Plus, second bench seat, baby seat adapter, and box cover were adjusted at that time.

In practice, this means: if an offer only says “for Urban Arrow Family,” that information is not sufficient. Pay attention to whether it explicitly mentions Family, FamilyNext, or FamilyNext².

Lighting on the FamilyNext²: think of exterior and interior lighting separately

On the FamilyNext², Urban Arrow has further integrated the lighting on the bike. The taillight is now seamlessly incorporated into the rear mudguard. For the box, the same practical question remains as with the FamilyNext: What happens under the rain cover?

Exterior lighting ensures you can see the road and the bike is perceived from the outside. However, under a closed rain cover, the interior remains a separate area. This is exactly where CargoGLOW comes in.

Regarding the optional FamilyNext Design LEDs, caution is currently advised: the official Urban Arrow product page explicitly lists them as accessories for the FamilyNext. The FamilyNext² is not currently named as a compatible model. Therefore, we would not order them as FamilyNext² compatible based solely on the similar name. CargoGLOW on the FamilyNext²: the rain cover is the deciding factor

For CargoGLOW, the new rear construction of the FamilyNext² is not the deciding point. Our interior lighting is installed under the rain cover. Therefore, what matters most is which rain cover and which frame sit over the box.

Since Urban Arrow continues to use the FamilyNext Rain Cover Plus for the FamilyNext², you should select the Urban Arrow Next version of CargoGLOW for this setup.

CargoGLOW provides even light inside the interior under the rain cover without blinding. Children and luggage remain visible even in the dark. At the same time, the box is illuminated from the outside, helping you be seen more easily – which increases safety. Luggage rack: you need the FamilyNext² version here

With the luggage rack, the logic is reversed. Urban Arrow explicitly states that rear accessories such as the previous Essential luggage rack do not fit the FamilyNext². The reason is the newly redesigned rear.

Urban Arrow therefore offers a specific FamilyNext² luggage rack. So, if you already own a luggage rack from the FamilyNext or are looking to buy a used one, you should not assume it can be simply transferred.

Battery lock: Standard Lockride does not fit

The manufacturer's information is also clear regarding the battery lock: the standard Lockride does not fit the FamilyNext² due to the changed frame and rear geometry. Urban Arrow has developed a specific FamilyNext² battery lock for this purpose and lists it as a specific accessory.

This is a good example of why the model name alone is not enough for the FamilyNext². Two parts might work perfectly on the FamilyNext and yet not fit the FamilyNext² as soon as they are attached to the newly designed rear.

Family, FamilyNext, and FamilyNext²: how to avoid wrong purchases

The accessory logic has changed several times over the course of three generations:

1. Urban Arrow Family: the original generation with its own box and rain cover variants.
2. Urban Arrow FamilyNext: new front frame and new box geometry; important box accessories were redesigned for this.
3. Urban Arrow FamilyNext²: front and box remain as they were for the FamilyNext, the rear is new.

This allows almost any accessory question to be roughly categorized. For box accessories for the FamilyNext², the FamilyNext generation is usually the right starting point. For rear accessories, you should specifically look for a FamilyNext² approval.
