Winther Cargoo: Rain cover, lighting, and interior cabin light

With the Winther Cargoo, visibility is well thought out right from the factory: headlights and taillights are part of the standard setup for the e-drive version, complemented by reflectors on the wheels and a reflective strip on the canopy. Nevertheless, once the canopy is closed in the dark, an area often remains that this lighting hardly reaches: the cabin itself.

This is exactly what you notice in everyday life. Buckling up in the morning, unloading in the evening, or finding a glove buried somewhere under jackets and bags. In this post, we’ll show you what the Cargoo canopy already offers, what the reflectors and exterior lights do – and when interior lighting becomes useful.

What lighting does the Winther Cargoo have as standard?

For the current Cargoo, Winther describes the front and rear lights as part of the electric motor package. Both are powered by the drive system’s battery and can be operated via the display on the handlebars. Additionally, there are reflectors on the front, back, wheels, and pedals.

The canopy itself also contributes to visibility: Winther integrates a reflective strip there. This makes sense because, in the dark, a cargo bike with a large cabin should be noticeable from more than just the front and back.

However, it is important to distinguish: Reflectors do not glow themselves. They reflect existing light back. And the front and rear lights are intended to illuminate the road and make the bike visible in traffic – not to illuminate children and luggage inside the cabin.

The Cargoo canopy: plenty of protection, but no interior light

The current Winther Cargoo can be equipped with a large cabin canopy. Winther uses stable 22 mm aluminum poles, four windows, and multiple attachment points. The canopy provides protection against rain and wind and can be opened at the front and back.

This is practical for everyday family life. At the same time, the open box becomes a clearly defined interior space. As soon as it is dark outside, the light from street lamps or headlights is often no longer sufficient there.

So, the canopy solves the weather protection issue. Interior lighting solves the visibility issue within the cabin.

Why light in the Cargoo cabin is so helpful in everyday life

Anyone who uses their Cargoo year-round knows the typical situations:

  • You want to see if the harness is properly fastened in the morning.
  • A child is looking for their hat, gloves, or water bottle.
  • You are unloading groceries from the box in the evening.
  • Toys are hidden somewhere under the canopy between bags and blankets.
  • You want to quickly see what’s going on in the back with a glance.

Standard bike lighting is not made for any of this. That is exactly why interior light is not just "more lighting," but a function in its own right.

Headlight, reflectors, and interior light: What actually does what?

Component Task What it does not replace
Headlight Illuminates the road ahead of the bike Light inside the cabin
Taillight Makes the bike visible from behind Interior lighting
Reflectors on bike and canopy Reflect light from outside A dedicated light source
CargoGLOW Illuminates the interior under the canopy Required bike lighting

The interaction is crucial: exterior lights and reflectors take care of road traffic. CargoGLOW brings light exactly where you need it additionally in daily family life – into the cabin.

Our CargoGLOW interior lighting for the Winther Cargoo

We offer CargoGLOW specifically for the Winther Cargoo. In the shop, you simply select the “Winther Cargoo” version and then decide whether you want it with or without a dimmer.

For the Cargoo, you receive a 1-meter long CargoGLOW LED strip with five matching clips. The strip is attached to the inside of the rain canopy frame. It is flexible, waterproof, and produces neutral 4000 K light. The integrated diffuser distributes the light so that it does not glare.

Power is supplied via a standard 5V power bank via USB. Therefore, you do not need to tamper with your Cargoo's electrical system.

The practical effect is simple: You see children, harnesses, and luggage better – and the illuminated interior is also much more visible from the outside in the dark. This makes you easier to see and additionally increases your safety.

With or without a dimmer?

We offer both versions for the Winther Cargoo.

Without dimmer: simple and uncomplicated

If you mainly use the light for getting in, buckling up, searching, or unloading, the standard version is perfectly sufficient. Connect the power bank, turn on the light – done.

With dimmer and remote control: more control

If children ride along in the dark regularly, the dimmable version is more comfortable. It can be brighter while buckling up. During the ride, you can reduce the light. The matching wireless remote control is included with this version.

The decision depends less on the Cargoo and more on your daily routine: simple light or flexibly adjustable brightness.

Winther Cargoo or Cargoo 2+2? Please do not confuse them

Winther currently offers both the Cargoo and the larger Cargoo 2+2. These models have different cabin and canopy designs.

The CargoGLOW version we currently offer in our shop is explicitly labeled “Winther Cargoo”. This article therefore refers to the standard Cargoo. If you ride a Cargoo 2+2, please do not simply order the same version on suspicion.

This clear distinction is important because accessories for cargo bikes often look similar but still have different dimensions or attachment points.

Isn’t the reflective strip on the Cargoo canopy enough?

The reflective strip is useful for passive visibility, but it only becomes visible when light from the outside hits it. It also doesn't help you to see anything inside the cabin.

CargoGLOW works differently: the interior itself glows. This gives you a better view inside, and at the same time, a larger visible light area is created under the canopy.

Winther Cargoo in autumn and winter

Especially in the dark season, several things come together: the canopy stays mounted more often, the days are short, and many typical family trips take place in the dark in the morning or late afternoon.

A simple system is worth it then:

  1. Check front and rear lights: They are the basis for every ride in the dark.
  2. Keep the canopy and reflectors clean: Only clean reflectors can reflect light effectively.
  3. Illuminate the interior separately: This way, you can see harnesses, children, and luggage even under a closed canopy.
  4. Stow the power bank properly: The cable should be neatly routed and not hang loosely in the cabin.
  5. -->

Why not just use a small battery-powered lamp?

You can certainly do that. For occasional use, a small battery-powered light is often sufficient. However, as soon as you drive in the dark regularly, the usual questions arise: Where do you attach it? Does it glare? Does it stay in place on bumpy roads? Does it only illuminate a small spot or the entire cabin?

FAQ: Winther Cargoo, canopy, and interior lighting

Does the Winther Cargoo have interior lighting in the cabin?

The current Winther pages describe front and rear lights, reflectors, and the reflective strip on the canopy. Integrated interior cabin lighting is not listed as part of the standard equipment there.

Does CargoGLOW fit the Winther Cargoo?

Yes. We have a dedicated version “Winther Cargoo” – with or without a dimmer.

Does the same version fit the Cargoo 2+2?

We currently cannot confirm that. Our shop version is explicitly named for the Winther Cargoo. The Cargoo 2+2 has a different cabin and canopy concept.

Does CargoGLOW replace front and rear lights?

No. CargoGLOW is additional interior lighting. Regular bicycle lighting remains necessary.

What is the advantage of CargoGLOW over the reflective strip on the canopy?

The reflective strip reflects external light back. CargoGLOW generates its own light inside the cabin. This allows you to see more inside, and the illuminated area under the canopy is much more perceptible from the outside.

Do I need the dimmer for the Winther Cargoo?

Not necessarily. If turning the light on or off is enough for you, go for the standard version. If you want to adjust the brightness differently for buckling up, during the ride, or when unloading, the version with a dimmer and remote control is more comfortable.

More light in the Cargoo cabin

The Winther Cargoo already provides a good foundation for darkness: headlights, taillights, reflectors, and a reflective strip on the canopy. However, a dedicated light source for the interior is missing.

This is exactly where CargoGLOW comes in: better overview in the cabin and a larger visible light area for the outside world.
