Rain cover, rain protection tarp, or canopy for the cargo bike?

Rain cover, rainproof tarp, box cover, tarpaulin, protective hood: When it comes to cargo bikes, many terms are thrown around interchangeably. The problem with this: the products sometimes look similar in pictures, but have completely different functions.

If you want to transport children in the rain, you need something different than for an empty box in a parking space. And if your entire cargo bike is kept outside, a flat box cover over the bench seat won't help you.

Here, we explain the differences so you quickly know what you really need.

What is a rain cover?

A rain cover is the enclosed structure over the transport box. It usually has poles, transparent windows, and openings for getting in and out.

Its task is clear: protect children or other passengers from wind and rain while riding.

Urban Arrow, for example, explicitly describes its Family Rain Cover Plus as protection against wind and rain. The side panels can be rolled up so that children can get in and out.

Typical features of a rain cover are:

• Poles or rigid supports,
• windows,
• enough headroom for children,
• side or front openings,
• ventilation options and
• fastenings that fit the respective box.

What is a rainproof tarp or box cover?

A rainproof tarp usually lies relatively flat over the box. It protects the bench seat, luggage, or groceries from rain and dirt.

Urban Arrow calls this accessory a box cover. It covers the EPP box when it is not being used and protects the interior from rain and dirt.

Babboe uses the term rainproof tarp (Regenschutzplane) for a similar type of product. The goal there is to keep the transport box and its contents dry.

The crucial difference from a rain cover: A flat box cover does not create a protected interior with headroom.

What does "tarpaulin" (Persenning) mean?

"Tarpaulin" is basically another term for a protective cover. You will mostly find it in accessories for boxes or open cargo areas.

A tarpaulin is stretched over the box and protects the contents from rain. It is normally not a roof for children riding along.

This term appears more frequently, especially with cargo bikes that have a large cargo box. So, if you are looking for a rain cover and read "tarpaulin" somewhere, take a close look: it is usually a flat cover, not passenger protection.

And what is a protective hood for the whole cargo bike?

A protective hood or bike cover is pulled over the entire parked bike.

It is practical if your cargo bike is kept outside and you want to additionally protect the frame, box, saddle, and electronics from weather and dirt.

You don't ride with it on, of course. The hood is exclusively intended for the parked bike.

With large cargo bikes, you should also pay attention to the dimensions. A universal bike cover might fit well without a rain cover, but suddenly be too tight with a high structure mounted.

Own a rain cover and a box cover at the same time? That can make sense

Many families actually need both.

The rain cover stays mounted for rides with children or is put on quickly in bad weather. The flat box cover, on the other hand, is practical when the bike is parked or when you are only transporting luggage.

A typical day could look like this:

• Morning trip to daycare with children: Rain cover.
• Bike parked outside during the day: Box cover over the empty box.
• Afternoon shopping without children: Depending on the weather, box cover or open box.
• Bike parked outside completely overnight: Additional protective hood for the whole bike.

The products do not automatically replace each other.

What about a sun canopy?

A sun canopy serves a different purpose again.

A classic rain cover is relatively closed at the sides so that wind and rain stay out. In summer, heat can build up underneath accordingly.

Babboe therefore explicitly points out that a sun canopy is constructed in a more airy way and allows more air to circulate at the sides. It protects against direct sun without reproducing a closed rain cover.

If you also use your rain cover in summer, pay special attention to sufficient ventilation and use the intended openings.

Which product do you need for which purpose?

You are transporting children in the rain

Then you need a suitable rain cover for your specific cargo bike. Important factors are the model, generation, seating system, and headroom.

You only want to keep the box dry

Then a box cover, rainproof tarp, or tarpaulin is often sufficient. It is faster to mount and significantly more compact than a full rain cover.

Your entire cargo bike is kept outside

Then a large bike cover or protective hood is the appropriate category.

You are looking for shade for children in summer

Then a sun canopy or a similarly airy system intended for this purpose by the manufacturer is worth it.

Why exact terminology is so important for accessories

Unfortunately, the terms are not the same for all manufacturers.

What one manufacturer calls a "box cover" is called a "rainproof tarp" or "tarpaulin" by the next. At the same time, "cover" is sometimes used as an umbrella term for rain covers, sun canopies, and protective hoods.

That is why the product name alone is not enough. Always look at the design:

• Are there poles?
• Is there enough headroom for children?
• Does the product have windows?
• Are there entry options?
• Is it explicitly intended for riding with passengers?
• Or does it just lie flat on the box?

With these questions, you can usually recognize immediately what type of accessory it is.
