Why you should be careful with cleaning agents

Rain covers are usually made of several materials: coated fabric, transparent window film, zippers, seams, velcro, and sometimes reflective elements.

A cleaner that works fine on a standard bike frame may be completely unsuitable for the window film or coating.

Therefore, as a safe rule of thumb:

• clean as gently as possible,
• test in an inconspicuous area first,
• and follow the manufacturer’s care instructions if you are unsure.

For example, Lovens explicitly specifies a damp, soft cloth without soap or chemical cleaners for the Explorer 2 rain cover. Dolly recommends lukewarm water and a cloth or soft brush for the Joy rain cover and warns against using abrasive tools.

Step 1: Remove coarse dirt

You should not rub sand, road grime, or small pebbles directly over the material with pressure. Otherwise, they act like sandpaper on the transparent surfaces.

It is best to remove loose dirt carefully first. Afterward, you can work with a damp, soft cloth.

This is especially worth doing regularly in winter. Otherwise, mud and road salt will remain stuck to seams, fabric, and fasteners for weeks.

Step 2: Wipe down fabric and exterior surfaces

For normal daily use, lukewarm water is usually enough. Work without heavy pressure, and it is better to wipe gently twice than once with force.

Areas around the following are particularly important:

• zippers,
• seams,
• velcro fasteners,
• mounting points,
• pole channels, and
• the bottom edges of the cover.

More dirt often collects there than on the large fabric surfaces.

Step 3: Clean transparent windows without scratching

The windows are the most sensitive part of many rain covers. Small scratches are particularly noticeable there and can significantly impair visibility over time.

For normal cleaning, you should therefore work with a clean, soft cloth and little pressure. If coarse dust or sand is on the window, rinse it off or pick it up carefully first—do not rub over it while dry.

You should not simply use alcohol as a blanket rule. There are manufacturers that explicitly allow it: both Lovens and Dolly mention 70% alcohol as a possible cleaning method for the windows of their current rain covers. However, that does not automatically mean that every other transparent film can handle the same.

Step 4: Don't forget reflectors and reflective details

Reflective logos, strips, and piping can only work well if they aren't hidden under a layer of dirt and road grime.

Lovens and Dolly therefore explicitly point out in their care instructions that reflective surfaces must be kept clean.

This is especially useful in autumn and winter. When it is dark, rainy, or the weather is bad, every clearly visible detail on the cargo bike counts.

Step 5: Check zippers and openings

Since you are cleaning the cover anyway, it is worth taking a quick look at the parts that are moved the most in daily life.

Check:

• Do the zippers still run smoothly?
• Is there sand or dirt in the teeth?
• Are the velcro surfaces free of lint?
• Are the snap buttons and hooks still secure?
• Are there small tears in areas under high tension?

Small problems are much easier to solve early than when a zipper jams or a seam has already torn further.

Very important: Let the rain cover dry completely

Folding up a clean, damp cover is not a good idea. Residual moisture will remain trapped between the fabric and the window film.

This encourages unpleasant odors, mildew, and in the worst case, mold.

Therefore:

• open and air it out as much as possible after a wet ride,
• let it dry completely before folding it up,
• do not leave wet blankets or clothing in a closed cover,
• and store the cover in a dry place.

Dolly explicitly recommends dry, well-ventilated storage. Lovens also stipulates that the rain cover should be kept dry.

How to properly store the transparent windows

The windows, in particular, do not like sharp creases.

For the Explorer 2 cover, Lovens recommends placing the windows inward when packing up and then rolling the cover. This is intended to avoid creases in the transparent surfaces.

Even if your cover is constructed differently, the principle is sound: do not fold windows sharply if not necessary and do not place heavy objects on them.

Dolly also notes not to store heavy items on the rain cover.

What to do about mold or mildew?

The best thing is to prevent them from occurring in the first place. Therefore, the most important protection is not a particularly aggressive cleaner, but consistent drying and airing out.

If spots are already present, you should not just reach for chlorine cleaners, mold removers, or strong alcohol. Such agents can damage coatings, colors, or window film.

Check your manufacturer’s care instructions first. If no suitable agent is mentioned there, start with the mildest method and test in an inconspicuous area.

Can the rain cover go in the washing machine?

As a rule, you should assume: no, unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it.

A rain cover consists of more than just fabric. Window film, coatings, seams, reflective elements, and fasteners can be damaged by the washing machine, spin cycles, or high temperatures.

The current instructions from Lovens and Dolly that we have reviewed describe manual cleaning with a cloth or soft brush—not machine washing.
