Riese & Müller Load 60/75: Rain cover & interior lighting

The Riese & Müller Load is one of those cargo bikes where the rain cover is not just an accessory for bad weather. Anyone who regularly transports children soon starts using the protected area at the front like a small passenger compartment. However, that is precisely when you notice something in autumn and winter: The bike is well-lit on the outside – but it can still be quite dark under the closed cover.

When buckling up, getting in after daycare, or when a glove has disappeared somewhere in the box on the way home, the front light doesn't help much. It illuminates the road. You need a different solution for the area under the rain cover.

In this guide, we therefore look at the Riese & Müller Load 60 and Load 75, the rain cover, and interior lighting as a complete system. We will also classify the current model generation Load5 60 and Load5 75 so that the model names do not get confused.

Load 60, Load 75, Load5 60 or Load5 75 – what is current?

Riese & Müller is offering the current 2026 model generation as the Load5 60 and Load5 75. The number continues to represent the different lengths of the cargo area: For the Load5 60, the manufacturer specifies a cargo area of 60 × max. 52 cm and a maximum of two child seats; for the Load5 75, it is 75 × max. 54 cm and a maximum of three child seats.

Many bikes already in daily use, however, bear the familiar names Load 60 or Load 75. That is why both naming worlds appear today when searching for accessories and spare parts.

Important for CargoGLOW: In our shop, the compatible version is currently explicitly listed as "Riese & Müller Load 60/75". We do not automatically derive an approval for the new Load5 from this. If you ride a Load5 60 or Load5 75, we prefer to clarify the fit clearly before you order.

Why does it get dark so quickly under the rain cover?

A rain cover protects children from wind and weather. At the same time, however, it changes how light enters the cargo area. You will notice this particularly clearly:

• in the morning on the way to daycare or school,
• in the late afternoon in autumn and winter,
• on poorly lit side streets,
• when buckling up under a closed cover,
• when you are looking for bags, gloves, or toys in the box.

The bike's standard front light does not solve this problem because it has a completely different task: It illuminates the area in front of the bike. On the current Load5 60 and Load5 75, Riese & Müller includes high-quality front and rear lights depending on the configuration. The transport box under the cover remains a separate area nonetheless.

Interior lighting and bike lights are two different things

This is the most important distinction: Interior lighting replaces neither the headlight nor the taillight. It supplements the mandatory bike lighting where the latter, due to the design, hardly helps – in the interior of the rain cover.

For families, this results in two different tasks:

• Exterior lighting: To see the road and be visible as a bike in traffic.
• Interior lighting: To keep an eye on children, harnesses, and luggage even in the dark.

What good interior lighting for a Load should provide in everyday life

On a cargo bike, it is not enough to just attach the brightest possible light somewhere. Especially when children are sitting under the cover, other criteria are more important.

1. Uniform light instead of a bright point of light

A single bright lamp can illuminate a small area very well while the rest of the box remains dark. It becomes even more uncomfortable when children look directly into the light source. For the interior, evenly distributed and diffuse light is therefore particularly suitable.

2. The light must not glare

The position under the rain cover is crucial. The light source is located relatively close above the passengers. With CargoGLOW, an integrated diffuser distributes the light in such a way that it does not glare.

3. Attachment must withstand vibrations

A cargo bike does not drive on a test bench. Cobblestones, curbs, and bumps are part of everyday life. Therefore, interior lighting should not hang down after a few trips or constantly need to be realigned.

4. Rain and moisture are part of it

Even under a rain cover, the environment does not remain completely dry. Wet jackets, condensation, and a damp cover are normal. CargoGLOW is therefore waterproof and designed for this area of use.

5. Cables and power supply must be suitable for everyday use

Loose cables in the passenger area are annoying and look improvised. At the same time, the power supply should remain uncomplicated. CargoGLOW runs via a standard USB connection on a normal 5V power bank. You do not need your own large battery or complicated electrical installation on the bike for this.

CargoGLOW for Riese & Müller Load 60/75

For the Riese & Müller Load 60/75, CargoGLOW is available from us as a separate selectable variant. This means you don't have to assemble a solution yourself from universal LED strips, adhesive pads, and cable holders.

CargoGLOW was developed as interior lighting for cargo bikes under the rain cover. The system combines:

• 4000 K neutral light,
• an integrated diffuser,
• light that does not glare,
• a waterproof design,
• power supply via USB and 5V power bank,
• our PerfectFit mounting system for the compatible variant,
• optionally a version with a dimmer including a remote control or without a dimmer.

The image shows the effect of CargoGLOW under a rain cover in general. It is deliberately not an image marketed as a Load photo.

In everyday family life, this means: You can see better when buckling up whether the harnesses are sitting correctly, you have children and luggage in view even in the dark, and you can find small items in the box much faster. At the same time, the box lights up outwards as well. As a result, you are seen better by cars, cyclists, and pedestrians, thereby increasing your safety.

With or without a dimmer – what fits better into everyday Load life?

Both variants fulfill the same basic task: light in the box. The dimmer is a comfort feature that can quickly pay off in everyday family life.

With dimmer: useful if you want a lot of light for a short time when getting in or buckling up, and find a lower brightness more pleasant while driving. The variant comes from us including a remote control.

Without dimmer: useful if you want to keep it as simple as possible and a fixed brightness is sufficient for your everyday life.

Load 60 or Load 75: Does the longer cargo area make a difference with the light?

With the current Load5, the two models differ significantly in the length of the cargo area. The Load5 60 is more compact and designed for up to two child seats; the Load5 75, with its 75 cm cargo area length, offers more space and, according to the manufacturer, room for up to three child seats.

For interior lighting, it is therefore not only the pure brightness that is interesting, but above all how evenly the light is distributed over the usable area. Especially with a longer box, several individual, very spotty light sources do not automatically produce a more pleasant result.

Our shop variant is designed as Riese & Müller Load 60/75. The specific PerfectFit version is designed for these compatible Load models.

Can you simply use an LED strip or a battery-powered light instead?

Of course. Interior light in a cargo bike is not a complicated physical problem. A universal LED strip, a string of lights, or a small battery-powered light can also bring light into the box.

The difference lies primarily in how much work you want to put into attachment, diffuser, moisture protection, cable routing, and integration into the rain cover yourself.

What about the new Riese & Müller Load5 60 and Load5 75?

This is currently the most important model question. Riese & Müller calls the new generation Load5 60 and Load5 75. Visually and structurally, however, one should not simply deduce that every accessory from the previous Load generation automatically fits.

Therefore, the following currently applies to us: The selectable CargoGLOW variant is Riese & Müller Load 60/75. If you are already riding a new Load5, send us your model or a photo of the rain cover briefly before you order. Then we will check the fit instead of selling you something on a hunch.

Checklist: Retrofitting interior lighting on the Load sensibly

1. Clarify the model generation: Load 60/75 or new Load5 60/75?
2. Consider the rain cover: The attachment must match the existing construction.
3. Check light position: Children should not look directly into the LEDs.
4. Prefer diffuse light distribution: The entire box should be illuminated in a usable way.
5. Keep moisture in mind: Not only the LED strip but the entire system must fit the place of use.
6. Route cables cleanly: Harnesses, entryways, and moving parts must not be obstructed.
7. Place the power supply in an accessible location: A power bank should be easy to charge and operate.
8. Don't forget exterior lighting: Interior light supplements the front and rear lights but does not replace them.

Frequently asked questions about the Riese & Müller Load and CargoGLOW

Is there a CargoGLOW for Riese & Müller Load 60 and Load 75?

Yes. A separate variant "Riese & Müller Load 60/75" can be selected in our shop – in each case with a dimmer including a remote control or without a dimmer.

Does CargoGLOW also fit the new Load5 60 or Load5 75?

We are currently not approving this across the board. The new Load5 is a current model generation and our shop variant is currently explicitly labeled as Load 60/75. If you have a Load5, we will check the fit with you before you order.

How many children fit into the current Load5?

Riese & Müller specifies a maximum of two child seats for the Load5 60 and a maximum of three child seats for the Load5 75. The respective national regulations also apply to the transport of children.

Do I need the e-bike battery for CargoGLOW?

No. The standard CargoGLOW variant is operated via a standard USB plug with a 5V power bank.

Is CargoGLOW waterproof?

Yes. CargoGLOW is waterproof and developed for use under the rain cover.

Does the lighting glare the children?

CargoGLOW works with an integrated diffuser. This distributes the light evenly and does not glare.

Does CargoGLOW replace the front light or rear light?

No. CargoGLOW is additional interior lighting for the area under the rain cover. The mandatory bike lighting must be present and functional independently of this.

Conclusion: On the Load, the area under the rain cover is its own lighting zone

Riese & Müller equips the Load with high-quality bike lighting. For families, however, this does not solve every situation: As soon as the rain cover is closed and children are sitting in the box, the interior becomes its own area that the front light cannot meaningfully illuminate.

This is precisely where interior lighting comes in. It makes buckling up, getting in, and searching in the dark easier, lets you keep a better eye on children and luggage, and ensures that the illuminated box is better perceived from the outside.
